I was diagnosed with PCOS six months ago. Haven't had a menstral cycle in over two years. I went from a size 2 to a 11. Not only is my pride hurt, but the hair growth and the conflicting theories are driving me crazy. I want to have kids, I want to look cute again. My Dr. says not too much HRT because it causes cancer. Is this true? Is the stuff their doing to treat it worse than the disease? I have very high insulin and testosterone levels too. My Dr. also says no ovarian blasting because it's bad for patients. Anyone ever had Ovarian blasting? Do they still do it?
Does Hormone replacement therapy cause cancer? I have PCOS, I am 26. I'm afraid of what's happening to me.
PCOS is not an easy condition to have, with all the changes you've described.I understand..
But your doctor's right....HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) will increase your feminine hormones and improve your appearance BUT will prevent your body producing its own natural hormones. It will also prevent you from ovulating and so,you won't be able to get pregnant, and more cases of breast and cervical cancer have been noticed in women on HRT.
So,it's definitely self-defeating in the end.
As for ovarian blasting,do you mean laser treatment? If so,this is used for inoperable cancers of the ovary and not PCOS,as it destroys cells.
Take heart, while PCOS is hard to bear,it's also relatively easy to treat. You're young and it's been detected early, you have very good chances.Just hang in there, follow your doctor's prescriptions, have patience and you WILL pull through this...
Peace.
Reply:Hormone therapy can increase the RISK of some cancers (breast, ovarian, uterine), but does not directly CAUSE cancer. It seems the benefit of taking the hormones may outweigh the risk for you, but it's up to you to make your own informed decisions.
I'm not familiar with ovarian blasting...
