I have had on and off dull aching in my left side where my ovary is for the past 5 years or so. It has seemed to come and go ever few months. I had dealt with it for about 4 years and just assumed it was an ovarian cyst. I got married and got pregnant on the very first try. I had a beautiful baby boy 1 year ago. Now the cyst is back, I have a baby now, and my mind is getting away from me and driving me crazy. I keep thinking I have ovarian cancer. I had a c-section and wanted to ask if the delivering doctor inspect your ovaries while they have you opened up? My OBGYN said that he did and everything looked fine....but my mind keeps getting carried away. If it really was cancer, wouldn't I have gotten very sick by now...after 5 years of having this off and on dull ache? I always resigned myself to the fact that it was a cyst but now I'm scared and my mind is getting away from me.
I'm going in for a check up in a week, but I'm going crazy thinking about this. What do you think?
Question about ovarian cysts - I'm freaking out...?
You say your dull ache is "off and on". Please read about functional ovarian cysts at http://www.mayoclinic.com/print/ovarian-... Your OBGYN can draw blood for a CA125, which may be elevated in the case of ovarian cancer. I am 46 and have had ovarian cysts since age 19. I've had them torque and burst, been hospitalized and put on IV antibiotics, and have seen on a CT scan that they are sometimes the size of golf balls. It is not likely you have ovarian cancer; painful ovarian cysts are simply something most women get eventually. You must speak frankly to your OBGYN about your concerns; only he/she can address this issue medically.
Reply:Just go back to your OBGYN and tell him/her about your concern. If he/she has already checked, I'm sure you are fine, but if you keep worrying, just go ask again.
Reply:Be sure to tell your OBGYN next week that there is something wrong and you want it investigated. No one knows your body better than you. In any case, the only way to find out what is really going on is to see your docotor and DO NOT take the standard, "it is all in your head". It is not normal to have a dull ache on and off again for years on end, but it could be many minor things other than cancer. Please do not freak out about cancer for the next week - this is not going to help you at all. Concentrate on the fact that you are finally going to get answers and take comfort that your OBGYN already had a good look from the inside!
From MedLine Plus;
"Ovarian cancer usually happens in women over age 50, but it can also affect younger women. Its cause is unknown. Ovarian cancer is hard to detect early.
The sooner ovarian cancer is found and treated, the better your chance for recovery. But ovarian cancer is hard to detect early. Many times, women with ovarian cancer have no symptoms or just mild symptoms until the disease is in an advanced stage and hard to treat. Symptoms may include:
Heavy feeling in pelvis
Pain in lower abdomen
Bleeding from the vagina
Weight gain or loss
Abnormal periods
Unexplained back pain that gets worse
Gas, nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite
Treatment is usually surgery followed by treatment with medicines called chemotherapy. "
I hope this was a little helpful for you, but you can always check with your local cancer centre (usually in a hospital) if you want more information. Take a deep breath and concentrate on your beautiful child right now. Be well and be happy! My thoughts of great health for many years are with you.
