I answered a question earlier today about using baby lotion on a 4 week old baby. The woman had been told not to use lotion for some reason. I told her that I had never heard that and that I use Johnson's Soothing Naturals. I told her not to use any baby powder though because there is a link between baby powder and ovarian cancer. Anyway I got 2 thumbs down for having a bad answer and that kinda made me mad. Was I wrong? Here is the artical on the ovarian cancer thing:
Q. What kind of exposure is dangerous?
A. Talc is toxic. Talc particles cause tumors in human ovaries and lungs. Numerous studies have shown a strong link between frequent use of talc in the female genital area and ovarian cancer. Talc particles are able to move through the reproductive system and become imbedded in the lining of the ovary. Researchers have found talc particles in ovarian tumors and have found that women with ovarian cancer have used talcum powder in their genital area.
What the.....?
OMG!!!!
Why is this information not more widely given? Health visitors should be informing us mums. I didn't use powder as my baby suffers from dry skin as it is, but I know plenty of people that have.
Maybe this could be linked to increased infertility. If it can cause cancer, I'm sure it can cause other problems.
Well done for alerting us.
Reply:I have heard not to use baby powder but not lotion
Reply:I've never heard the cancer thing, ever. I've always heard that talc powder is so light, and a bunch of it whiffs up into the air when you apply it, and can be inhaled by the baby, and that's not a good idea. I always used cornstarch on my kids instead. Johnson and Johnson makes an excellent medicated cornstarch, that I used on all four of my children.
Reply:I heard that talc is dangerous too . . .
Reply:You are spot-on with the link between ovarian cancer and talcum powder.
I read YEARS ago about this, and tumours were dissected and examined and found to have traces of talc in them.
I never used it after reading that, and I make sure my kids know how dangerous it is too.
People give bad ratings when they know bugger-all about the subject and think they're SO clever! LOL
Reply:Your advice was perfectly sound! there are always malcontents who will give thumbs down for their own puny reasons!!!!
Reply:You are absolutely right!! People tend to be know it alls. They think if they have never heard of it, then it must not be true. I wouldnt worry about it, you gave the right advice.
