I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon. I already know the results will have cancer cells since I have ovarian cancer and it has spread to my uterus and cervix. The pap is just for the insurace company to give some clearence. I have taken so much time off work because of my situation that I can not afford anymore time.
Can you go to your OB-Gyn for a pap while you have your period under extenuating circumstances?
Usually that is the Dr's choice. Some will and some won't. I would call and check first.
Reply:in these circumstances I would go. You need to start treatment. I wouldnt call, they may say no if asked, they will probably do it if you just go. best of luck to you, dear!
Reply:The presence of gross blood in a pap smear will usually render the smear techically unsatisfactory for interpretation. On the other hand, if frank cancer is present in abundant cellular quantity, then a malignant report might be issued. However, for any laboratory to give a reliable report, it would usually require an optimally suitable sample. Furthermore, if there are issues on cancer origin e.g. ovarian carcinoma metastatic to the cervix versus adenocarcinoma-in-situ versus endometrial carcinoma, then this might be difficult to reliably state on a technically unsuitable slide - especially a bloodstained smear.
Biopsies are usually performed for a reliable diagnosis of cervical cancer. Pap smears are recognised to be a screening test - NOT a diagnostic test. Abnormal pap smears always require histological confirmation prior to definitive treatment. This requirement is a medical one. Insurance company requirements are irrelevant in regard to patient care.
