False positive on a pregnancy test.?

One of my cousins' wives recently said she was pregnant. For the month or two that she said she was, several people in her immediate family and myself (I had stayed a few evenings at her in-laws house while she was there) suspected she was lying. I am currently 22 weeks pregnant, and many of the things she said did not add up. She also had never shown her husband any kind of pregnancy test, claiming she went on her own to the health dept to be tested. When he would try to attend doctor's appointments with her, she kept rescheduling them to days that he worked (after he'd already requested certain days off that she said appts were so that he could be there.) All in all, there were just MANY things that did not quite fit.

About a week ago, the girl is now saying that it turns out she was never pregnant. She said that her ovarian cancer (it is confirmed she has this) made her test false positive on a urine pregnancy test and that the symptoms she had been having

False positive on a pregnancy test.?
Well, I've never heard of cancer causing a false positive in women, but it is known that if a man gets a positive on a pregnancy test, he may have testicular cancer...that's the only natural way a man would produce hcg. So as sketchy as her story sounds...I think it's possible. Ovaries provide hormones...a false positive would be a hormone imbalance...cancerous ovaries would likely be imbalanced in hormone production.
Reply:I've never heard of such a thing. False positives are very, very rare. Maybe it was what they called a chemical pregnancy? Or that she miscarried very early on?

Hopefully, someone can give you a better answer, because this just baffles me. :-(
Reply:The test tests for a certain hormone that only shows up when you are pregnant. It is really rare (slim to none!) to have a false positive in normal circumstances. This would not be considered normal circumstances with her cancer. Miscarriages could cause "false positives"; although it wouldnt be a true "false positive."

Could it be that she decided to abort so that she could go through chemo?
Reply:it is impossible for a preg test to show a false positive because the test looks for a specific hormone in urine that is only in pregnant women.... tell her to check her facts before she trys to screw with people...
Reply:i honestly don't think ovarian cancer has anything to do with a false positive. This girl is probably just lying to get attention.
Reply:While I do agree with all the responses here that a false positive is very rare. On the other hand, cancer can make your body do very weird things. This could very well have been caused by her ovarian cancer. I think I have read somewhere that there are tests for cancer that involve HCG.
Reply:There are some medications that can cause a false positive on a home pregnancy test. You can also get a false positive if you wait too long to read the results.

Certain forms of cancer such as breast and ovarian can also lead to a false positive.
