My best friend, said he's dating someone that has an STD and caused her to get Ovarian Cancer. I never really heard of an STD causing Ovarian Cancer, but I'm not saying I don't believe him. She got the STD because SOMEONE used a that date rape drug on her and had sex with her. I want to know if there is a such STD as this, and if so, what is it? How does it cause Ovarian Cancer? I'm not asking for anyone to be immature and judge this girl so quickly, because she's definitely not happy about it and she would've wanted to wait to lose her virginity. Thanks so much.
I have a question about a STD?
Amelia is COMPLETELY wrong. HPV is NOT herpes.
HPV is the virus that causes genital warts and cervical cancer.
Herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and can cause sores on the genital area (genital herpes), the mouth area (cold sores) and various other illnesses or diseases like the chickenpox, shingles, mono, etc.
Herpes and HPV are NOT the same virus and having NOTHING to do with each other!
That being said, HPV can cause several different cancers, the most common being cervical cancer which affects 10,000 women in the US every year! HPV can also cause other cancers like anal cancer, vulva cancer, and penile cancer. HPV has not been shown to be a cause of ovarian cancer. In fact, the exact cause of ovarian cancer is usually unknown, but it can be related to family history of ovarian cancer.

Reply:I have a good deal of knowledge on STDs and complications that they can cause (even the oddities), and not once have I read of any STD that can cause Ovarian Cancer.
There are some STDs - specifically Pelvic Inflammatory Disease - that can cause complications with the uterus and also with fertility, but again, there is nothing that I have read and/or heard that has anything to do with cancer of the ovaries.
My take on this is that:
1) this woman your friend is dating has been misinformed,
2) that this woman misunderstood that certain STDs - most likely HPV - can cause cancer in the genital region, especially in women (particularly CERVICAL cancer)... BUT I've never heard of HPV causing ovarian cancer.
3)she is lieing to your friend - perhaps telling a partial truth to her is enough to ease her conscience.
4)she is mistaking another disorder of the female reproductive organs - such as endometriosis - as cancer. Endometriosis can be a VERY painful experience for a woman.
I hope this helps!
Reply:hpv is a form of the herpes virus and yes it has been known to cause ovarian cancer in women
Reply:STDs in and of themselves do not lead to ovarian cancer.
However, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) which results from untreated STDs (such as chlamydia) has been shown to lead to an increased risk of cervical and ovarian cancers.
It is possible that, like many women who do not have regular GYN exams or who do not have routine STD screenings, that the woman had an STD that went untreated and led to PID.
Cancer is a complicated disease, but at its base level, cancer is an overgrowth of mutated cells.
Your DNA is constantly making copies of itself to replace dead/dying cells. If a mutated cell makes copies of itself it may be destroyed, or it may continue to make more and more copies of itself. These mutated cells can infect other cells and tissue around them.
Where that mutation is located determines the type of cancer that a person develops.
Mutated cells forming as a result of PID could lead to increased risk of cancer in reproductive organs.
