I ahve had ovarian cysts before and two operations to remove them,i have had a pain,not a severe one under my ribs on the left hand side where i think my spleen is,i have had it on and off for over 2 years,if it was cancer would i be getting iller as time went by,could it be an ovarian cyst pushing up on my spleen causing it to hurt,i will go to the doctors after xmas,just need some advice thanks

The best and cheaper way to see what is happening inside you, is to take a high definition ultrasound of your lower pelvis, with 2D definition.
If there is a mass, it can be easily seen in the study, and will tell you the size...
That is the forst step....If there is a mass, it has to be excised..
However, the most common symptom of ovarian cancer, is NOT pain, but rather an increase of the abdominal girth, because the peritoneum is filled with fluid, coming from the tumor itself..
So, if you have pain in the lower ribs, the odds that you have ovarian cancer are indeed very remote..
However, to give you, peace of mind (and your doctor too) a high definition ultrasound of the pelvis is the thing to do next...relax....

Question about ovarian cysts and CT scan........?
I hope somebody out there might know the answer to this. I had an abdominal/pelvic CT scan done about 6 or 7 wks ago which showed that I have an ovarian cyst on my right ovary. I'd had a laparascopy done about 6 wks prior to the CT scan but the dr wasn't able to see my right ovary during the procedure. I've been experiencing extreme pain right in the area where the right ovary is but the dr isn't sure if it's the cyst causing the pain or something else so we're trying a couple of different things %26amp; I go see him again in about 3 wks from now. But now I'm worried thinking, oh my god, if he couldn't see the ovary during the laparoscopy, %26amp; I have a cyst on my ovary, how do I know that it might not be cancer? I know that the majority of cysts are not cancerous %26amp; are just fluid-filled, but I'm assuming that the CT scan wouldn't be able to tell if it was fluid filled or not. So how would they know that it's a cyst as opposed to a tumour? Is there anybody out there who can give me more info?

Hey! I had a masive cyst on my left ovary 3 years ago that was picked up in a simple ultrasound (and i mean massive it had 5 litres of fluid in it). The only way that you can tell if its a tumour and cancerous or just a cyst is when its removed, they take it off for testing and come back and tell you if its cancerous or not.. as you said more times that not it is non cancerous and just fluid filled! The best thing to do is stop stressing out and wait untill the doctor removes it!!

Has any one else experienced Pre-Mature Ovarian Failure?
I am 33 and the mother of 4 children. In January I got my period and after that I did not get one again. I went to the doctor in June and was told that I had pre-mature ovarian failure and was in early menopause. I might have to start estrogen therapy and am concerned with all of the negative side effects (breast cancer, cervical cancer, etc). What are your thoughts? Are there any alternatives to estrogen therapy?

Does Hormone replacement therapy cause cancer? I have PCOS, I am 26. I'm afraid of what's happening to me.
I was diagnosed with PCOS six months ago. Haven't had a menstral cycle in over two years. I went from a size 2 to a 11. Not only is my pride hurt, but the hair growth and the conflicting theories are driving me crazy. I want to have kids, I want to look cute again. My Dr. says not too much HRT because it causes cancer. Is this true? Is the stuff their doing to treat it worse than the disease? I have very high insulin and testosterone levels too. My Dr. also says no ovarian blasting because it's bad for patients. Anyone ever had Ovarian blasting? Do they still do it?

PCOS is not an easy condition to have,with all the changes you've described.I understand..
But your doctor's right....HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) will increase your feminine hormones and improve your appearance BUT will prevent your body producing its own natural hormones.It will also prevent you from ovulating and so,you won't be able to get pregnant,and more cases of breast and cervical cancer have been noticed in women on HRT.
So,it's definitely self-defeating in the end.

Question about risk of IVF (cancer, breastfeeding, hyperstimulation)?
I had IVF done in September and got ovarian hyperstimulation and almost died, I was in the hospital for about a month. My friend recently was diagnosed with breast cancer and doctors told her it was from too many hormones in her body, she was 39 at the time and had IVF done 6 years ago, resulting in a twin pregnancy and then took birth control pills after that. I've also heard that you can't breast feed after IVF because of the progesterone that you are pumped with during early pregnancy. I am 18 weeks pregnant with twins and I wondered if anyone else has noticed a link.

There is something wrong with my adrenal glands and I'm scared incase it is cancer?
I am 28 and have already been diagnosed with premature ovarian failure i had no periods for 2 years now i have recieved a letter concerning my adrenal glands i have looked up on internet and all i see is cancer cant get an appointment to speak to my doctor. My test is on wed but i am so scared i cant eat and im crying all the time can anyone tell me what my chances are

I am not going to give you a diagnosis based on so few elements but in my opinion your symptoms are pointing to Addissons disease a typical malfunction from the pituitary gland and the adrenals: this has absolutely nothing to do with cancer and if its Addissons all you have to do is take a pill daily and watch your salt intake. Do try and think positively, and stop looking at the Internet to try and second guess what the problem could be - you'll only make yourself feel worse. Ring your doctors surgery and explain over the phone how you are feeling. They might be able to get you an appointment when they realise how stressed you are - or at the very least, get the doctor to call you back with some reassurance and info. Other than that, all you can do is wait and see what the results of the tests are - and not eating will only make you feel tired, which in turn will make you feel more emotional, so do try and get some food down you. If you are really upset and are not coping, then ring one of the voluntary organisations like the Samaritans. They can't help you medically, but talking your feelings through just might make you feel a bit calmer and in control. Do let us all know how the tests went though - I'll be thinking of you.

As the other poster said, it could be Addison's disease. In some people with premature ovarian failure, the body produces antibodies against the ovaries and against the adrenal cells. Reply:Sounds like you have hypopituitarism and not just enough adrenal stimulation but low growth hormone which would cause osteoporosis and low repro hormones which would cause no periods. Yes, it could be a tumor but almost always pituitary tumors are non cancerous. It is rare for it to be cancerous, so don't worry! Also, there are other things that can go wrong with the pituitary to cause damage to it. The good thing is that you caught it and that you are on your way to getting treatment. Low adrenal function can be VERY dangerous, so you need to be on meds for it and be careful of very stressful situations. In fact, its best to ask you Dr. for an emergency injection just in case you have an auto accident. This could put your body into shock very quickly and could kill you. Also you will need a medic alert tag--very important! Another thing...make sure when you have your IGF1 tested (growth hormone) that you DO get it replaced with injections if it is low. There is still misimformation about the importance of this in adults but current research shows high mortality rate in adults who are deficient (damages the heart over time). I know this because I have pituitary damage myself (non-tumor--Sheehan's Syndrome) and suffered the effects of low growth hormone, repro hormones and low cortisol. Once I replaced them I felt so much better and almost normal again. Good luck to you!

Cancers, how to test for them.?
Well, it's like this, every time i have my period, i have extreme pain in my abdomen. i do not usually get this and when i do, it only lasts for about half an hour. after wards, i always find a lump of 'meat'. again, my GP says that it may simply be a blood clot, but what i get looks like a miniature fillet! it is not small, the smallest one was about 1cm long. i have had this since i was 17. what could it be? Ovarian cancer? Cervical Cancer? a Uterine cancer? Please help.

Since you have doubts about your GP's comment, seek another doc for a 2nd opinion (or 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, seek as many opinions as you need, as a good doc would not be offended that you want more objective opinions). Abdomen pain is usually not a cancer symptom. The diagnostic tests are usually ultrasonography; endometrial biopsy, colposcopy, or dilatation and curettage with hysteroscopy to obtain tissue for histologic exam; testing for blood in stool; and vaginal and cervical specimen to test for infections. This is a brief description of the cancer symptoms:
CERVICAL CANCER
Vaginal spotting or heavier bleeding, usually after sex or douching, but can also occur spontaneously. Persistent, pink-tinged, foul-smelling vaginal discharge and postcoital (after sex) pain. As the cancer spreads, back and sciatic (nerves near the back of the hip) pain, leg swelling, anorexia, hematuria, dysuria, rectal bleeding.
ENDOMETRIAL HYPERPLASIA/CANCER
Thin, brownish bleeding or bright red, profuse bleeding following sex or douching. Bleeding progressively become heavier and more frequent, leading to clotting and anemia. Pelvic, rectal, lower back and leg pains may accompany the bleeding,
OVARIAN TUMORS
Can also cause endometrial shedding and heavy bleeding unrelated to coitus or douching. Palpable pelvic mass, increased cervical mucus, and/or breast enlargement may occur as well.

I hope this helps to ease your worries. But do pay close attention to subsequent periods that might have similar type of clotting. Write down the details, such as the size, how thick, the color, when does each period begin (regular or irregular pattern?), how long each period lasts, how long or how often each clotting occurs, and so on. When necessary, bring that journal to your doc's attention.
